Rotation Around a Single Bond in Ethane
This movie shows ethane rotating around the central carbon-carbon bond. The space filling model clearly shows that the Van Der Waals radii of the hydrogens on carbons #1 & 2 only slightly overlap during this rotation. This small overlap is sufficient to cause the eclipsed conformation to be slightly higher energy.
