Axial Steric Interactions in Cyclohexanes

This movie shows the rotation of an axial ethyl group on a cyclohexane ring. As you can clearly see, as the bond rotates there is significant overlap between the ethyl group and the hydrogens on the ring. These unfavorable interactions cause axial alkyl groups to be energetically unfavorable.
