A. General Purpose

Value: trace element sensitivity -- depend on calibration
Big issue: measure vapor for solution concentration--technique of atomization critical
Virtue of selectivity from atomic resolution - suppress interferants

-- emission - need high resoltuion optics - separate lines different elements

-- absorption - use hollow cathode lamp to select atomic analyte and low res optics

B. Micro-Survey of Principles of Atomic Spectra - review q.m course

States characterized by angular momentum -- term symbols |LSJM> à (l^m) n ^2S+1L_J

Selection rule: Transitions allowed for opposite parity, must change configuration
