Peer-led Study Groups

Peer-Led Study Groups:
The Science Learning Center is partitioned into several areas with tables and whiteboards. Each of these areas is named after a famous scientist, for example, the Marie Curie Room. Our peer-led study groups and the science TA's are scheduled into these areas by subject, time and day. The two areas utilized by the peer-led study groups are the Pasteur Room and the Darwin room (which is shared with biology TA's).

The study groups are organized for many of the introductory science courses and do require advance sign-up. Sign-up typically occurs in the second week of the semester and is done by going to the SLC front desk and putting one's information on the sheet provided. Note that signing up for a study group means that the student is committed to attending EVERY single session of the study group, each week of the semester, through the last week of classes. (Note that the response may be large and if so, we do a lottery to choose the names of students in the groups.)  The study groups then start in the third week of class.

They are led by students who have recently excelled in that course and provide a dynamic opportunity for students to interact with other students in the same class and with the peer leader.  The peer leader facilitates learning by engaging all the students in the group in a collective learning process, which can include reviewing notes together, learning problem-solving techniques, assisting each other with understanding topics, and other such study skills.  There is significant data showing the efficacy of learning that occurs when students learn from and with their peers!
