1. UIC Chemistry Department faculty, staff, postdocs, and students
and other UIC faculty and staff associated with the Chemistry Department
may all obtain an account in the facility. Please contact Dr. C. Harwood
or fill out an online application form to obtain an account. New users will have to go through a
30 minute check out session to insure that users will not be "lost" in the UNIX system. (We have had plenty of users
sucked into the machine, never to be seen again!!!)
2. The facility is a resource for scientific work. Personal use of the computers is acceptable as long
as it does not interfere with anyone doing, or needing to do, scientific work.
To this end, web browsing should be done on slower, less-useful machines (such as slarti or mephisto).
3. There is no quota limit on disk space usage, however,
disk space usage is checked while doing backups.
IT IS ASKED THAT USERS LIMIT THEIR DISK USAGE TO 100 MB!
Users who exceed the limit will be asked to archive or remove data.
Users that have a valid need for more disk space can discuss their requirements with Dr. C. Harwood.
To check disk usage, type "du -k" at a command prompt, the last number shown is the total usage in
the home directory.
4. It is the users responsibility to archive data that is to be kept secure. For this purpose,
the computers are outfitted with a JAZ drive. Disks may be purchased from Dr. C. Harwood (~$150.00 for 1 Gb).
Other methods of archiving are to FTP data to an ACC lab for archiving using other removable media (such as ZIP Disks and Floppies).
5. Accounts inactive for six (6) months will be removed without warning.
It is the users responsibility to see to it that any data is archived properly or moved to another users active account.
