Welcome to the UIC Chemistry Alumni Homepage
Welcome to the UIC Chemistry Alumni Web page, which is dedicated to alumni and other friends of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. We have set these pages up as a means for our extensive alumni to keep abreast of the activity in our Department and to communicate with us and with each other. We hope that these pages will be a vibrant part of the Department's interaction with its alumni, for you are an indispensable part of our community. A key feature of the pages is the Alumni database. When you enter your information in this, it is sent to the Department. This will help us to keep you up-to-date about what is going on in the Department. This information is not shared with anyone unless you tell us it is OK to do so. We have also heard from some alumni that the ability to exchange job information is important. So, we will also accept information from UIC Chemistry Alumni about jobs they or their companies may have available. We will post this information so other alumni and our current students can know about these jobs. The position of UIC as a research university located in the heart of a great city is important for the state of Illinois. Here our undergraduate and graduate students interact with the some of the most advanced teaching and research programs in the State of Illinois. UIC Chemistry alumni are a select group within UIC. The recipients of our undergraduate chemistry and biochemistry degrees are much sought-after for future employment and post-graduate study. Just a few notes about our work with our current students. Our excellence in undergraduate education continues to be recognized by the University, with a string of Silver Circle and Teaching Recognition Awards for faculty. Innovations in teaching from the preparatory to the advanced biochemistry laboratory have been recognized in peer-reviewed publications, new text materials, and several NSF grants. And at UIC we were the proud recipients of an inaugural Departmental Teaching Excellence Award in 2000. We have also continued to excel in one of our most important endeavors: graduate education. We produce an average of fifteen to twenty Ph.D.'s per year, far outstripping all other UIC graduate programs. The excellence of our Ph.D. students is seen in the positions they receive in major companies and as postdoctoral researchers in the leading research groups in the nation. And they benefit from the scholarship and grantsmanship of our faculty. Of the total grant expenditures in the Department (now exceeding $4,000,000 per year) our faculty provide research assistantships to more than half of our continuint graduate students through more than $1,200,000 per year in stipend and tuition support to our students.
